Industrial Highlights | COOEC Targets First Brazil FPSO Contract in 2027

COOEC Continues to Pursue Opportunities in Brazil’s FPSO Market

China’s Offshore Oil Engineering Co. (COOEC) is aiming to secure its first FPSO contract in Brazil in 2027, according to industry reporting published by Upstream on October 9, 2026. The company recently finished second in the tender for Petrobras’ Albacora floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, highlighting its continued pursuit of opportunities in Brazil’s offshore oil and gas sector.

The Albacora tender is part of Brazil’s wider offshore development landscape, where large floating production facilities play an important role in developing deepwater oil fields. For engineering contractors and equipment suppliers, such projects represent a market in which technical compliance, fabrication capability, material traceability and supply-chain coordination are important considerations.

Why FPSO Projects Matter for Offshore Equipment Suppliers

An FPSO is a floating facility designed to process and store hydrocarbons produced offshore. Its topsides can incorporate process systems and equipment such as pressure vessels, separators, columns, reactors and heat exchangers, depending on the project design.

These systems operate under different combinations of pressure, temperature and fluid conditions. Material selection must therefore follow the equipment design, process conditions and project specifications rather than a general assumption that one material suits every application.

For equipment manufacturers and procurement teams, several considerations are particularly important:

Corrosion resistance: The process medium and operating environment determine whether carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex stainless steel, nickel alloys or other materials are appropriate.

Material cost and structural requirements: For certain applications, clad plate can combine a structural base metal with a corrosion-resistant alloy layer, reducing the need to use solid high-alloy material throughout the component.

Fabrication and inspection: Material standards, bonding quality where applicable, traceability, non-destructive examination and documentation requirements need to be established early in procurement.

Supply-chain coordination: Material availability, machining requirements, inspection schedules and delivery milestones must align with the equipment manufacturer's production plan.

These factors can affect both the technical suitability of the selected material and the execution of the equipment manufacturing schedule.

Where Clad Plates May Fit into FPSO Equipment Manufacturing

Clad plates are used in selected corrosion-resistant process equipment, including pressure vessels and heat exchangers, when specified by the equipment design and project requirements.

A clad plate combines a base metal with a metallurgically bonded cladding layer. The base material provides structural strength, while the cladding alloy supplies the required surface properties. Depending on the service conditions, possible material combinations include carbon steel or alloy steel with stainless steel, duplex stainless steel or nickel-alloy cladding.

Clad plate is not a universal requirement for FPSO equipment. Its suitability depends on the process medium, design conditions, applicable standards, fabrication route and purchaser approval requirements.

For procurement teams evaluating clad plate, the supplier's role extends beyond providing a material quotation. Manufacturing capability, bonding quality, inspection documentation and coordination with downstream machining can all be relevant to the final component.

FUGO TECH: Clad Plates and Machined Components for Industrial Equipment

FUGO TECH manufactures clad plates and special-alloy materials and provides machining for components used in industrial equipment manufacturing.

Its product scope includes clad plates, special-alloy plates and machined components such as tube sheets, baffle plates and dish heads. Depending on the project requirements, these products may be relevant to pressure vessels, heat exchangers and other process equipment.

For equipment manufacturers working on offshore and oil and gas projects, early clarification of material grades, dimensions, applicable standards, inspection requirements and machining scope helps establish a more reliable basis for technical evaluation and procurement.

As offshore developments continue to create opportunities for engineering contractors and equipment suppliers, material selection and manufacturing coordination remain important parts of project execution.
