Industrial Highlights | ADNOC Gives Green Light to $6.2B Umm Shaif Gas Project—and That’s Good News for Clad Plate Suppliers

The UAE’s latest offshore megaproject brings sour gas development back into the spotlight, along with the specialized materials needed to keep it all from falling apart.

ADNOC has officially signed off on a $6.2 billion plan to develop the gas cap at the Umm Shaif offshore field. The project, which counts TotalEnergies, Eni, and CNPC among its partners, is set to deliver more than 600 million cubic feet of natural gas per day by 2030—enough to cover about 10% of the UAE’s current daily consumption.

For the clad plate industry, this isn’t just another project announcement. It’s a signal that the Middle East’s push into sour gas is gaining momentum, and with it, the demand for materials that can handle the corrosive punch of hydrogen sulfide.

Sour Gas Means Serious Material Requirements

Umm Shaif is no stranger to tough conditions. It’s been producing since 1962, making it Abu Dhabi’s longest-running offshore field. But the gas cap development brings a different set of challenges compared to conventional oil production. The reservoir contains significant levels of H₂S, and once you’re dealing with sour gas, material selection becomes a lot more complicated.

That’s where clad plates come in. The basic idea is simple enough: take a corrosion-resistant alloy like stainless steel or Inconel and bond it to a carbon steel backing. You get the corrosion protection you need without paying the full cost of solid alloy. In practice, it’s a lot more complex—bond integrity, thermal expansion differences, and fabrication all have to be managed carefully—but when it’s done right, clad materials perform reliably in exactly the kind of environments you find at Umm Shaif.

So where will clad plates actually be used on this project?

Pressure vessels and heat exchangers are the obvious candidates. Any vessel handling sour gas fluids needs internal surfaces that won’t crack or corrode over time.

Subsea pipelines are another major application. The gas will be transported to Das Island for processing, and those pipelines need to withstand both internal corrosion from H₂S and external corrosion from seawater.

Offshore platform topsides also rely on clad materials for piping systems, flanges, and transition joints, particularly where different materials meet.

A Pattern, Not a One-Off

What makes the Umm Shaif FID worth paying attention to is that it fits a larger trend.

Over the past few years, ADNOC has been steadily advancing its gas agenda. The Bab Gas Cap concession is already moving forward. The Hail and Ghasha development—one of the region’s largest sour gas projects—has been procuring clad pipes in significant volumes. In 2023, Industeel shipped over 3,000 tons of clad plates for the Shah Gas project’s onshore pipeline.

Saudi Aramco is running a parallel track with its Jafurah unconventional gas program, which also involves sour production and has been specifying clad materials accordingly.

The cumulative effect is a sustained procurement environment for clad plates, clad pipes, and related products. This isn’t a one-off spike driven by a single project. It’s a multi-year cycle of investment across the Gulf region, driven by two overlapping trends: rising global LNG demand and the strategic imperative to free up crude oil for export by shifting power generation to gas.

What This Means for Clad Plate Manufacturers

If you’re in the clad plate business, the Umm Shaif project is worth studying closely—not because it’s the only opportunity out there, but because it shows what clients in this region actually need.

First, scale matters. The project’s EPC contracts, valued at $5.1 billion combined, cover large-scale offshore infrastructure. Fabricators building pressure vessels and pipeline systems for projects of this size typically require large-format plates to minimize welding seams. Plates wider than 3,200mm and longer than 12,000mm are increasingly common specifications.

Second, quality assurance is non-negotiable. ADNOC’s engineering standards reference international codes including ASME, ASTM, and NACE MR0175 for sour service. Manufacturers need to demonstrate consistent bond quality through ultrasonic testing and mechanical property verification. This is not an area where shortcuts are tolerated.

Third, material combinations vary by application. Stainless steel 316L and 410S are common for general sour service. Nickel alloys like Inconel 625 and 825 are specified where higher chloride resistance or elevated temperatures are factors. Copper-based alloys show up in seawater-cooled heat exchangers. A manufacturer that can offer multiple cladding options and guide clients through the selection process has a clear advantage.

The Bigger Picture

ADNOC’s gas expansion plan targets 47 million tonnes per annum of LNG capacity by 2035. To get there, multiple offshore developments beyond Umm Shaif will need to reach FID in the coming years. Each of those projects will face similar material challenges, and each will create demand for clad plates.

For manufacturers who are already qualified to supply this market, the pipeline of opportunities looks steady. For those still building their credentials, the window is open—but it won’t stay open forever.
