Saudi Aramco has signed a landmark $11 billion midstream infrastructure agreement with a consortium led by Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) to accelerate the development of the Jafurah unconventional gas field, a project seen as the cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s natural gas expansion strategy.
Under the terms of the deal, a new joint entity — Jafurah Midstream Gas Company (JMGC) — will own and operate gas processing and natural gas liquids (NGL) fractionation facilities. Aramco will retain a 51% stake, while the GIP-led investor group will hold 49% through a 20-year lease-and-leaseback structure. The partnership allows Aramco to attract private investment while maintaining operational control and securing long-term access to midstream capacity.
“This collaboration supports Aramco’s ambition to deliver cleaner energy and enhance value from the Kingdom’s vast gas resources,” an Aramco spokesperson said following the signing.
The Jafurah field, located southeast of Dhahran, is one of the largest shale gas developments in the Middle East, with estimated resources exceeding 200 trillion cubic feet (Tcf). Phase 1 of the project, expected to start up in late 2025, aims to produce around 2 billion cubic feet of sales gas per day, along with significant volumes of ethane, condensate, and NGLs.
Aramco plans to invest more than $100 billion over the coming decade to fully develop Jafurah, supporting the Kingdom’s goals of reducing liquid fuel use in power generation and expanding its hydrogen and petrochemical sectors.
Construction of Jafurah’s gas plants, NGL units, and extensive pipeline network will involve major EPC contractors such as Hyundai Engineering, Saipem, and Technip Energies. These large-scale industrial facilities demand extensive use of corrosion-resistant metals, high-pressure components, and clad materials capable of withstanding sour and high-temperature service conditions.
Industry experts note that explosive and rolled clad plates, titanium-stainless steel transition joints, nickel alloy piping, and forged flanges will play crucial roles in the fabrication of pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and separation columns.
