BP has initiated oil and gas production at the Murlach field, marking its sixth major upstream project startup in 2025. This redevelopment adds approximately 15,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) to the BP-operated Eastern Trough Area Project (ETAP) in the central North Sea, a hub that has been operational for 27 years.
The Murlach field, formerly known as Skua, was discovered in 1986 and was previously operated by another company. BP acquired the field license in 2023 after it was relinquished by the previous operator. The redevelopment involved drilling two new production wells, installing subsea equipment, and making modifications to the existing ETAP central processing facility. By repurposing existing infrastructure, BP aimed to reduce development time and costs.
The Murlach project is part of BP's strategy to deliver 10 major upstream oil and gas projects by the end of 2027, contributing to the company's goal of adding 250,000 boe/d in combined peak net production.
Offshore oil and gas facilities, especially those operating in harsh North Sea environments, require materials that can withstand high pressures, temperatures, and corrosive conditions. Clad plates, which consist of a corrosion-resistant alloy layer bonded to a base metal, are commonly used in such applications.
Subsea Equipment: Clad plates can be used in the construction of subsea manifolds and pipelines to resist corrosion from seawater and produced fluids.
Processing Facilities: In the ETAP central processing facility, clad plates may be utilized in heat exchangers and pressure vessels to handle sour gas and other corrosive substances.
Flowlines and Risers: Clad materials can enhance the durability of flowlines and risers exposed to aggressive chemicals and high temperatures.
By incorporating clad plates, BP can ensure the longevity and reliability of its offshore infrastructure, reducing maintenance costs and downtime.
