Industrial Highlights | BP Greenlights Shah Deniz Phase 3 Expansion

Baku, Azerbaijan – June 2025 — British energy giant BP has officially approved the Phase 3 development of the Shah Deniz gas field, marking a major milestone in one of the world's largest gas-condensate fields. The expansion is designed to unlock additional reserves and extend output well into the 2040s, reinforcing Europe’s long-term gas supply diversification strategy amid shifting geopolitical energy dependencies.

Shah Deniz, operated by BP on behalf of a consortium of global partners—including SOCAR (Azerbaijan's state oil company), LUKOIL, TPAO, and Petronas—has been a cornerstone of the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC). The field already supplies gas to Turkey, Georgia, and southern Europe via the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP), Trans-Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP), and Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP).

Engineering Implications and Clad Plate Demand

The new phase includes drilling additional subsea wells and expanding offshore infrastructure, along with new processing capacity at the Sangachal Terminal—one of the world’s largest integrated oil and gas terminals.

This high-pressure, sour-gas environment will significantly increase demand for corrosion-resistant materials, including explosive clad plates and rolled bonded clad materials, particularly those combining carbon steel backing with titanium or nickel alloy cladding. These materials are critical in resisting hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), chlorides, and CO₂ exposure typical in deepwater sour gas reservoirs.

Opportunity for Clad Plates

Given the scale and complexity of Shah Deniz Phase 3, engineering contractors like Technip Energies, McDermott, or Subsea 7 (if involved) may rely on such clad materials to meet EPC requirements and ensure long-term field operability.

Fugo's Titanium + Steel and Nickel Alloy + Steel clad plates offer both mechanical strength and superior corrosion resistance. These properties make them suitable for offshore topside modules and subsea processing equipment where space, weight, and safety margins are critical.
