Industrial Highlights | Foster Wheeler Wins EPC Contract for Petron Refinery Expansion — Highlighting Demand for Advanced Clad Materials

Foster Wheeler, through one of its Global Engineering & Construction subsidiaries, has been awarded an engineering and procurement contract by Petron Corporation for the expansion of its Bataan Refinery in the Philippines. The project includes the detailed engineering and supply of two double-fired Terrace Wall coker heaters for a 37,500 barrels-per-stream-day Delayed Coker Unit (DCU).

The new DCU forms a core element of Petron’s refinery modernization program, designed to enhance processing flexibility and convert heavier, lower-value crude residues into lighter and more profitable petroleum products. The unit will utilize Foster Wheeler’s proprietary SYDEC™ delayed coking technology, recognized for maximizing liquid yield while minimizing coke formation.

Project Background

The Petron Refinery Master Plan 2 (RMP-2) aims to transform the refinery into a fully integrated, energy-efficient, and high-conversion complex capable of processing a wider range of crudes. This development is expected to strengthen Petron’s refining margins and reduce the Philippines’ reliance on imported finished fuels.

The addition of a modern delayed coker unit supports these goals by handling heavy residues and maximizing output of valuable transportation fuels. Such high-temperature, high-pressure environments require materials that combine strength, corrosion resistance, and durability — areas where advanced clad metal solutions play an essential role.

Role of Clad Plates in the Project

Key refinery equipment such as reactors, coke drums, transfer lines, fractionators, and high-temperature vessels often require corrosion-resistant clad plates. These plates typically consist of a carbon or low-alloy steel base bonded with a corrosion-resistant alloy layer such as stainless steel, nickel alloy, or titanium.

In delayed coking units, the inner walls of coke drums and transfer piping are exposed to severe thermal cycling and corrosive hydrocarbons. Using explosive-bonded or rolled-bonded clad materials ensures a long service life, reduced maintenance downtime, and safer operation.

Clad materials can also be applied in heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and process columns to combat sour-service and high-temperature corrosion.
