India is intensifying its energy engagement with Africa, seeking to diversify its energy sources and strengthen strategic partnerships across the continent. This initiative comes as India's crude oil imports from Russia declined to a two-year low in February 2025, prompting a renewed focus on alternative suppliers.
India's pivot towards Africa is driven by the need to secure reliable energy sources and foster economic collaboration. In February 2025, India's oil imports from African nations surged to approximately 330,000 barrels per day, more than doubling from 143,000 barrels per day in January. This increase underscores Africa's growing importance in India's energy strategy.
Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), one of the country's leading refiners, is set to receive significant crude shipments from Africa, including two million barrels of Nigeria’s Okwuibome crude and one million barrels each from Nigeria’s Akpo and Angola’s Mostarda fields. These engagements highlight the strengthening energy ties between India and African nations.
In addition to trade, India is making substantial investments in Africa's energy sector. In December 2024, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) announced plans to invest approximately $32.9 billion in exploration and production blocks in Mozambique and Brazil. Furthermore, ONGC Videsh, BPCL, and Oil India Ltd hold a combined 30% stake in Mozambique's Area 1 project, targeting 75 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas. These investments signify India's commitment to expanding its energy footprint in Africa.
