Jakarta, Indonesia – August 5, 2025 – INPEX has officially begun the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase for the Abadi LNG Project in the strategic Masela Block, located in the remote Arafura Sea region of eastern Indonesia. This FEED effort covers four major contract packages: onshore LNG production (OLNG), Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO), subsea infrastructure (SURF), and the gas export pipeline (GEP) https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/+1.
Discovery and Ownership Timeline
INPEX initially secured 100% interest in the Masela Block in 1998 and discovered the Abadi Gas Field in 2000.
Shift from Offshore to Onshore
The project initially envisioned a Floating LNG (FLNG) system, but in 2015, Indonesia’s government mandated an onshore design—delaying the plan and prompting Shell to withdraw in 2020.
Revised Plan of Development (PoD)
The revised, government-approved development plan now includes Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) integration, with partnerships expanded to include Pertamina and Petronas in 2023.
Investment and Timing
The project, one of Indonesia's largest, carries an estimated development cost of around USD 34.7 billion—incorporating approximately USD 1 billion dedicated to CCS—and targets commercial operations by 2029.
Strategic Significance
As a National Strategic Project (PSN), it’s vital to Indonesia’s energy security and is expected to yield ~9.5 million tonnes of LNG, 35,000 barrels of condensate per day, and substantial domestic gas deliveries.
Market Direction
INPEX is actively seeking long-term off-take agreements, with expressions of interest totaling around 25 million tonnes per year—a move critical for securing project financing.
