

Seosan, South Korea, August 4, 2025 – In a pioneering move for green energy, LG Chem and Enilive—through their joint venture LG-Eni BioRefining—have formally broken ground on South Korea's inaugural hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility. This strategic development takes place within LG Chem’s expansive Daesan petrochemical complex in Seosan, situated approximately 80 kilometers southwest of Seoul.
Set to be operational by 2027, the plant is designed to process roughly 400,000 tons of renewable bio-feedstock annually, including used cooking oil and other organic waste, by harnessing the cutting-edge Ecofining™ technology, a collaborative innovation between Eni and Honeywell UOP.
LG Chem’s CEO, Shin Hak-cheol, highlighted that this investment signals a deliberate shift toward a low-carbon foundation, providing both sustainable growth and robust profitability. He emphasized how advancing bio-based fuel technologies like HVO reinforces LG Chem’s global competitiveness and adaptability to emerging customer needs.
Enilive CEO Stefano Ballista added that the Seosan facility reinforces their international expansion strategy. With operational plants in Italy and the U.S., and others underway in Italy and Malaysia, this new site helps Enilive target over 5 million tons of biorefining capacity by 2030, including up to 2 million tons of SAF.
