May 2025 – Energy & Engineering Brief
Brazilian energy giant Petrobras is poised to initiate the tender process for its 12th Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit at the Búzios field in the Santos Basin. This move aims to bolster natural gas output and support Brazil's energy infrastructure.
Discovered in 2010, the Búzios field stands as one of the world's largest ultra-deepwater oil fields, located approximately 230 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Operated by Petrobras, the field has rapidly expanded, with multiple FPSO units deployed to harness its vast reserves. The field's development is central to Petrobras's strategy to achieve a production target of 2 million barrels per day by 2030.
The forthcoming Búzios 12 FPSO is designed to address the increasing demand for natural gas processing in the pre-salt region. By augmenting gas handling capacity, this unit will play a pivotal role in optimizing resource utilization and meeting domestic energy needs.
In offshore oil and gas operations, equipment is subjected to harsh environments, necessitating materials that offer both strength and corrosion resistance. Clad plates, which combine a carbon steel base with a corrosion-resistant alloy layer, are integral in fabricating:
Pressure Vessels: Withstand high pressures and corrosive substances.
Heat Exchangers: Facilitate efficient thermal transfer while resisting corrosion.
Towers and Columns: Utilized in separation and processing operations.
