Industrial Highlights | SBM Offshore Advances Standardized FPSO Builds in Brazil

Two FPSO Projects Share a Standardized Hull Approach

SBM Offshore is progressing with two floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) projects for Brazil’s Sergipe-Alagoas basin, using standardized hull designs as part of its Fast4Ward® program.

The projects, SEAP-I and SEAP-II, were awarded by Petrobras in May 2026. Both units are designed for an oil production capacity of 120,000 barrels per day, with integrated gas treatment facilities. Delivery is expected in 2031 for SEAP-I and 2030 for SEAP-II.

According to SBM Offshore, the projects use its 11th and 12th new-build multipurpose floater hulls. Standardizing key elements of FPSO design can help project teams replicate established engineering solutions while coordinating procurement and construction across multiple units.

What Standardized FPSO Construction Means for Equipment Suppliers

FPSO projects bring together hull construction, topsides fabrication, process equipment, piping and extensive offshore integration work. Although standardized designs can improve consistency across projects, equipment packages still need to meet their specific operating conditions, engineering requirements and inspection criteria.

For equipment manufacturers and material suppliers, early coordination can be important in several areas:

Material specification: Material grades must match the equipment design, process medium, temperature, pressure and corrosion requirements.

Fabrication planning: Plate availability, forming, welding and machining need to align with component drawings and manufacturing schedules.

Quality documentation: Material traceability, inspection records and applicable testing requirements should be clarified before production.

Procurement coordination: Consistent specifications and timely technical approvals can help reduce avoidable changes during fabrication.

These considerations apply to many offshore process equipment packages, although the actual requirements depend on each project and equipment specification.

Clad Plates in Offshore Process Equipment

For selected pressure vessels and heat exchangers, clad plates can provide a combination of structural base metal and a corrosion-resistant alloy layer. Depending on the service conditions and approved design, possible cladding materials include stainless steel, duplex stainless steel and nickel alloys.

Compared with using solid high-alloy material throughout a component, clad plate may offer a material-cost alternative where its technical suitability is established. However, the selection must account for corrosion conditions, design requirements, bonding quality, fabrication procedures and project-specific approvals.

Clad plate is not required for every FPSO component. Its relevance depends on the equipment design and the purchaser's material specifications.

FUGO TECH: Clad Plate Manufacturing and Machining

FUGO TECH manufactures clad plates and special-alloy plates and provides machining for industrial equipment components, including tube sheets, baffle plates and dish heads.

For equipment manufacturers evaluating material options for pressure vessels and heat exchangers, coordinating clad plate production with downstream machining can help align material requirements, component dimensions and fabrication planning.

FUGO TECH’s product range may be relevant to equipment applications where clad or special-alloy materials are specified. Material selection and acceptance remain subject to the applicable design, project specifications and customer approval.
