Industrial Highlights | SBM Offshore Secures FEED Role for ExxonMobil’s Longtail FPSO Project in Guyana

Global offshore solutions provider SBM Offshore has been selected by ExxonMobil to carry out front-end engineering and design (FEED) work for a new floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit tied to the Longtail development offshore Guyana.

The award marks an important early-stage milestone, enabling initial engineering activities and allocation of a standardized hull under SBM Offshore’s Fast4Ward program.

The planned FPSO is expected to be a large-scale facility designed for both gas processing and condensate production. Preliminary specifications indicate processing capacity of approximately 1.2 billion cubic feet of gas per day and production of around 250,000 barrels of condensate per day, highlighting the project’s significant scale.

Subject to final investment decision (FID) and regulatory approvals, SBM Offshore is also anticipated to undertake the engineering, construction, installation, and operation phases of the project.

Background: Guyana Emerging as a Global Deepwater Hotspot

Guyana has rapidly transformed into one of the world’s fastest-growing oil and gas regions following a series of major discoveries in the Stabroek Block, led by ExxonMobil and its partners.

Multiple FPSO units have already been deployed in the region, with more under development to support increasing production capacity.

The Longtail project is particularly notable as it is expected to be among the first developments in Guyana focusing heavily on gas resources, rather than purely crude oil. Industry outlook suggests the project could play a key role in future gas monetization strategies, including domestic supply and potential export developments.
