Industrial Highlights | TechnipFMC Lands Major Contract to Extend Equinor’s Heidrun Platform Life

Stavanger–Houston, July 15, 2025 – TechnipFMC has secured a substantial integrated Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation (iEPCI™) contract from Equinor to upgrade and prolong the operational life of the Heidrun platform in the Norwegian North Sea. The contract, valued between US$75 million and $250 million, was confirmed following a successful pre-engineering (iFEED™) phase conducted by TechnipFMC .

What This Project Involves

TechnipFMC will deliver a comprehensive upgrade package for the Heidrun floating production platform, involving new subsea infrastructure, topside modifications, and support for future production enhancement. Installation work is expected to commence later this year, aligning with the company’s Q2 2025 order backlog.

Jonathan Landes, TechnipFMC’s Subsea President, emphasized that engaging early enabled more streamlined designs and an optimized field layout—an outcome enabled by the iEPCI™ process.

Background: Heidrun’s Strategic Value

Located approximately 175 km off Mid-Norway, in water depths of around 350 m, the Heidrun field has been in continuous operation since October 1995. Notably, it features one of the world’s largest tension-leg concrete platform designs. 

The current extension ensures that the platform remains a stable producer of oil and gas well into the 2030s, fitting into Equinor’s longer-term strategy to maximize value from mature North Sea infrastructure.

Clad Plates: Essential for Offshore Durability

A cornerstone of offshore platform upgrades, clad plates are composite materials comprising a carbon steel core laminated with a corrosion-resistant alloy such as stainless steel or nickel alloy. They are essential in the following ways:

Corrosion Resistance: Heidrun operates in a highly corrosive environment—with seawater, CO₂, and hydrogen sulfide exposure—where clad plates protect subsea equipment like manifolds and risers.

Structural Strength: The carbon steel core provides load-bearing capacity, while the clad surface resists wear and chemical cavitation, improving durability under wave and production stresses.

Cost and Retrofit Benefits: Instead of replacing entire structures, clad liners can be retrofitted inside existing modules—a faster, lower-cost solution that reduces offshore downtime.

Given the project’s emphasis on topside and subsea expansions, clad plates will likely be used in areas such as pressure vessels, piping manifolds, riser systems, and subsea structures, aligning with standard offshore engineering protocols.
