TechnipFMC has been awarded a significant subsea engineering and construction contract for a large-scale natural gas development project operated by a US supermajor in Australia. The contract forms part of the ongoing expansion of the Gorgon Stage 3 gas field, one of the country’s most important LNG resources.
The agreement covers the engineering, procurement, installation, and commissioning (EPIC) of subsea production systems, including manifolds, flowlines, umbilicals, and risers. TechnipFMC will also provide integration support with existing offshore infrastructure and coordinate with partners to ensure smooth operations from the wells to the onshore LNG processing facilities.
The Gorgon Stage 3 development builds on the success of previous stages, targeting additional natural gas production from subsea wells offshore Western Australia. Stage 3 aims to enhance production capacity, secure long-term LNG supply commitments, and meet rising energy demand in the Asia-Pacific region.
Scope: The project involves installation of subsea infrastructure connecting multiple new wells to existing processing platforms.
Operator: Chevron, in partnership with other stakeholders, continues to develop the Gorgon gas fields to increase LNG throughput.
Strategic Importance: Stage 3 will strengthen Australia’s role as a key LNG exporter, ensuring stable gas supply for domestic use and international markets.
Given the scope and subsea environment, the project is expected to require:
Carbon and Alloy Steels:
High-strength carbon steel for structural supports, risers, and subsea pipeline frames.
Alloy steels such as P22 and P91 for high-temperature and high-pressure piping sections.
Corrosion-Resistant Alloys (CRA):
Stainless steel (316L, duplex grades) for subsea manifolds and topside piping exposed to seawater and aggressive fluids.
Nickel-based alloys (Monel 400, Inconel 625) for sections handling sour gas or highly corrosive fluids.
Modular Skid and Equipment Fabrication:
Pressure vessels, columns, and heat exchangers fabricated with high-alloy or clad materials for durability and performance in corrosive and high-pressure service.
The project presents several applications where clad plates can provide cost and performance advantages:
Pressure Vessels and Columns:
Clad plates combining corrosion-resistant alloys with carbon steel backing can reduce material cost while maintaining resistance to CO₂, H₂S, and other corrosive components.
Heat Exchangers:
Shells, tube sheets, and pressure-containing parts fabricated with clad plates allow for enhanced corrosion resistance without the full cost of solid alloy materials.
Skid-Mounted Structures:
Structural frames and supports exposed to seawater or chemical environments can benefit from corrosion-resistant cladding, extending service life and reducing maintenance.
The Gorgon Stage 3 development highlights ongoing investment in offshore gas infrastructure in Australia. The project is expected to drive demand for:
High-performance steels and corrosion-resistant alloys.
Composite materials such as clad plates to optimize cost and durability for subsea and topside equipment.
Fabrication services for heat exchangers, pressure vessels, columns, and skid-mounted modules.
For suppliers and procurement teams, careful selection of materials—including the strategic use of clad plates—will be key to controlling costs while ensuring long-term operational reliability.
