Kuala Lumpur / Jakarta | June 24, 2025 – TotalEnergies is dramatically expanding its presence in Southeast Asia through a deepening partnership with Malaysia’s Petronas, targeting high-potential upstream oil and gas assets in both Malaysia and Indonesia. This move positions the French supermajor alongside Petronas and Indonesia’s Pertamina to jointly develop key fields—including the new Bobara oil block and strategic assets in the Malay and Kutai basins .
Bobara Block (Indonesia)
Petronas recently inked a production-sharing contract for the deep-water Bobara block—estimated to contain about 6.8 billion boe. The company is negotiating a trilateral partnership with TotalEnergies and Pertamina to develop this asset, marking Petronas’ maiden role as operator in Indonesian deepwater.
Cross-border JV Ambitions
Since February, Petronas and Eni have been in talks to consolidate around 3 billion boe of reserves plus 10 billion boe of exploration upside across both nations, with assets from both Malaysian and Kutai Basin operations being considered.
Malaysia Gas Asset Integration
In Malaysia, TotalEnergies continues integrating its fully owned SapuraOMV upstream assets—holding 40% in Block SK408 and 30% in SK310. The Jerun field in SK408 began production mid 2024, feeding gas into Petronas’ Bintulu LNG export terminal, boosting regional LNG infrastructure.
Rising Regional Energy Demand
Southeast Asia’s growing appetite for reliable, lower-carbon energy drives the urgency. Gas assets, especially those connected to LNG, are critical to meet this demand and support the region’s energy transition momentum.

Jerun operates at under $5 per boe with emission intensity below 10 kg CO₂e/boe—a strong fit with TotalEnergies’ low-carbon, low-cost strategy.
Upstream Synergies
By combining Malaysian and Indonesian assets—including Kutai Basin gas fields—the emerging JV could achieve a sustainable production rate of ~500 kboepd, bolstering combined expertise and enabling scale efficiency.
