Industrial Highlights | Turkey's Black Sea Gas Discovery: A Strategic Leap Forward and the Role of Clad Plates in Offshore Infrastructure

Turkey has announced a significant milestone in its energy sector with the discovery of a vast natural gas reserve in the Black Sea. The Tuna-1 well, located in the Sakarya Gas Field approximately 175 kilometers off the coast of Ereğli, was drilled to a depth of 4,525 meters and revealed over 100 meters of gas-bearing reservoirs in Pliocene and Miocene sands. This discovery, estimated at 11 trillion cubic feet (approximately 320 billion cubic meters) of natural gas, marks the largest find in the Turkish Exclusive Economic Zone and the entire Black Sea region.

The development of the Sakarya Gas Field is poised to transform Turkey's energy landscape. With production commencing in April 2023, the project is expected to reach a daily output of 10 million cubic meters, with plans to double this capacity in subsequent phases. This advancement not only aims to reduce Turkey's reliance on energy imports but also positions the country as a potential energy exporter in the region.

Integration of Clad Plates in Offshore Gas Infrastructure

The ambitious development of the Sakarya Gas Field necessitates the use of advanced materials to ensure the safety, durability, and efficiency of offshore structures. Clad plates, which consist of a corrosion-resistant alloy bonded to a steel base, are integral to this endeavor.

Key applications of clad plates in the Sakarya project include:

Subsea Pipelines: Transporting gas from deepwater wells to onshore facilities requires pipelines that can withstand high pressures and corrosive environments. Clad plates provide the necessary strength and corrosion resistance for these pipelines.

Processing Platforms: The floating production unit, acquired to process gas at sea, utilizes clad plates in its construction to ensure longevity and resistance to harsh marine conditions.

Onshore Processing Facilities: At the Filyos terminal, where the gas is received and processed, clad plates are used in pressure vessels and heat exchangers to handle the corrosive nature of natural gas and associated fluids.

The adoption of clad plate technology in the Sakarya Gas Field development underscores Turkey's commitment to employing advanced materials and engineering solutions in its pursuit of energy independence.
