Istanbul / Ankara | May 20, 2025 – Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) has announced a major new natural gas discovery in the western Black Sea—approximately 75 billion cubic meters (bcm)—at the Göktepe-3 well. With an estimated value of around US $30 billion, this find marks another milestone in the nation’s push toward energy independence .
Well location: Drilled at a depth of ~3,500 m—offshore of Turkey’s Sakarya gas field—by the 7th-generation drillship Abdülhamid Han in 2,154 m of water.
Quantity: 75 bcm of gas (~2.6 trillion cubic feet), enough for residential demand over approximately 3.5 years.
Value: An economic boost worth ~US $30 billion, as per government assessments .
Current production: TPAO’s first deepwater project—the Sakarya field—already produces ~9.5 million m³/day of gas (~350 MMcf/d).
Growth plans: The Sakarya Phase 2 expansion—under Wood’s project handling—aims to double that, targeting 15 bcm/year by 2026 (~30% of Turkish demand) .
National impact: This Göktepe find extends the country’s Black Sea reserve base from ~710 bcm to ~785 bcm—further reducing dependence on imported energy.
Future infrastructure: Turkish officials are planning a floating production unit (FPU-2) and connecting pipelines leveraging existing networks from Sakarya, speeding up commercialization.
Skill boosting: The discovery showcases growing domestic capabilities in deepwater operations through TPAO’s own drilling assets and increasing engineering autonomy.
In this deepwater development, the strategic use of clad-plate—carbonsteel panels bonded with corrosion-resistant alloys—could be critical. Here’s how:
Corrosion Resistance Underwater
Subsea pipelines, risers, and pressure vessels face saltwater and sour gas corrosion. Clad-plate liners extend component longevity without full stainless construction.
Reinforcing Aging Infrastructure
Tying new wells into the existing Sakarya FPU or processing facilities often requires reinforcing vessels and manifolds. Clad sections add strength and resist wear.
Cost & Downtime Savings
Clad retrofits are typically 30–50% cheaper than full stainless steel replacements and require less shutdown time—vital for maintaining steady gas supply.
Complance & Safety
With growing focus on safety and emissions in offshore oil and gas, clad-plate solutions meet engineering standards while boosting overall system integrity.
