Turkmenistan has taken a significant step forward in expanding one of the world’s largest natural gas developments, marking renewed momentum in Central Asia’s energy sector.
Recent developments indicate that the government has cleared key approvals for the next phase of expansion at the giant Galkynysh gas field, paving the way for increased production capacity and further international cooperation. The project is expected to enhance annual output by approximately 10 billion cubic metres, reinforcing the country’s role as a strategic gas supplier.
The expansion will be supported by international contractors, including subsidiaries of major energy companies, highlighting continued foreign participation in Turkmenistan’s upstream sector despite its traditionally restrictive investment environment.
Turkmenistan holds some of the world’s largest natural gas reserves, with the Galkynysh field alone ranked among the top globally in terms of resource size.
The country has increasingly positioned itself as a key supplier to Asian markets, particularly China, while also pursuing diversification through major export infrastructure such as the TAPI pipeline, designed to deliver up to 33 billion cubic metres of gas annually to South Asia.
With growing demand for cleaner-burning fuels, Turkmenistan’s gas sector is expected to maintain steady expansion, supported by ongoing upstream investments and infrastructure upgrades.
Large-scale gas field expansion projects typically involve:
· Gas processing plants (GPP)
· Sulfur recovery units (SRU)
· High-pressure pipelines
· Storage and export terminals
These facilities require extensive use of corrosion-resistant materials due to:
· High H₂S (sour gas) content
· Elevated pressure and temperature
· Aggressive processing environments
The expansion of the Galkynysh field is expected to create strong demand for clad materials, particularly in the following applications:
1. Pressure Vessels & Reactors
· Carbon steel + stainless steel or nickel alloy clad plates
· Used in separators, absorbers, and reactors
2. Heat Exchangers (Tubesheets & Shells)
· Clad plates widely applied in tubesheets and channel heads
· Especially critical in sour service conditions
3. Sulfur Recovery Units (SRU)
· Require high corrosion resistance (e.g., SS, Alloy 625 cladding)
4. Pipelines & Transition Joints
· Clad materials used for CRA-lined systems and transition joints
As Turkmenistan accelerates development of its gas resources, more EPC contracts are expected to be awarded in phases. This will likely involve:
· International EPC contractors (China, Korea, Europe)
· Regional fabrication yards
· Global material suppliers
For clad plate manufacturers and suppliers, early engagement with EPC contractors and approved vendor lists (AVL) will be critical to capturing opportunities in upcoming project phases.
