Viva Energy is advancing its $350 million Ultra-Low Sulfur Gasoline (ULSG) project at the Geelong Refinery in Victoria, Australia, aiming to commence production by late 2025. This initiative is set to reduce the sulfur content in gasoline to 10 parts per million (ppm), aligning with new national fuel standards effective December 2025. The project includes the construction of a new sulfur removal unit and supplementary equipment, with significant components already delivered and installed. The upgrade is expected to enhance fuel quality, reduce vehicle emissions, and support the introduction of advanced engine technologies in Australia.
Viva Energy, established in 2014 following the acquisition of Shell's Australian downstream assets by Vitol, is one of Australia's leading energy companies. The company supplies approximately a quarter of the country's liquid fuel requirements and operates an extensive network of service stations across Australia. The Geelong Refinery, operational since 1954, is one of only two refineries remaining in the country. It processes up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day, producing a range of products including petrol, diesel, LPG, jet fuel, and bitumen. The refinery also plays a crucial role in Australia's fuel security and is being transformed into a modern energy hub to support the nation's energy transition.
Clad plates, which consist of a corrosion-resistant alloy bonded to a carbon steel base, are integral to the construction of the new sulfur removal unit at the Geelong Refinery. These plates are used in pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and piping systems to provide enhanced corrosion resistance, particularly in environments dealing with hydrogen sulfide and other corrosive substances.
The use of clad plates ensures the longevity and safety of the refinery's infrastructure, reducing maintenance costs and downtime. Their application in the ULSG project underscores Viva Energy's commitment to adopting advanced materials and technologies to meet stringent environmental and safety standards.
Engineering firm UGL is partnering with Viva Energy to deliver the structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, and instrumentation works for the ULSG project. UGL's modular construction approach involves assembling large pre-fabricated modules off-site, which are then transported and installed at the refinery. This method enhances construction efficiency, safety, and quality control, while minimizing on-site disruptions. The collaboration between Viva Energy and UGL exemplifies a strategic partnership aimed at delivering a critical infrastructure project that contributes to cleaner fuel production and environmental sustainability.
