Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei | June 16, 2025 — A joint venture between UK-based engineering firm Wood and Brunei’s Tendrill International has secured a major five-year contract to provide brownfield engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP). The deal also includes an option to extend for an additional two years .
Scope & Scale
The TendrillWood JV, formed in 2023, will oversee integrated EPC operations across both onshore and offshore assets—handling everything from conceptual engineering to commissioning and startup
Employing around 1,000 staff—70% of whom are Bruneian—the JV emphasizes local-content development and regional supply-chain growth
BSP, Brunei’s top oil-and-gas producer, plays a central role in supporting the nation’s economy and energy security
Strategic Rationale & Long-Term Impact
Wood’s CEO, Ken Gilmartin, highlighted the company's long-standing relationship with BSP and its track record of delivering reliable, safe EPC services crucial for national energy security
Tendrill's managing director, Haryati Ramlee, framed the contract as a pivotal milestone to lift local industry standards and strengthen Brunei's domestic engineering expertise
With brownfield projects becoming more complex, the JV’s blend of global engineering standards and local workforce capacity positions it well to support BSP’s midlife asset upgrades.
Clad-Plate: A Vital Asset Upgrading Tool
An often overlooked but critical aspect of such EPC work is the strategic application of clad-plate—structural steel with corrosion-resistant alloys bonded onto its surface. Here's how it adds value:
Strengthening Aging Infrastructure
Brownfield assets frequently contain older piping and vessels exposed to corrosive chemicals and sea air. Welding clad-plates inside these structures reinforces aging metal without needing full replacements.
Resisting Corrosive Fluid Brines & H₂S
Offshore wells and separators handling sour gas or saline are particularly vulnerable. Stainless or nickel-based cladding offers robust resistance while retaining carbon-steel strength
Boosting Safety & Cost Efficiency
Compared to new stainless installations, clad-plate retrofits can cut costs by 30–50%, shorten shutdown duration, and align with safety regulations.
Improving Project Sustainability
Using clad-plate reduces the environmental footprint of brownfield projects by avoiding full-material replacements, supporting Brunei’s sustainability objectives.
