What's Roll Bonding

  • ‌Roll Bonding‌ is a solid-state welding technique that utilizes rolling pressure to join multiple metal layers into a composite material. Its key feature lies in its ability to seamlessly bond identical or dissimilar metals without melting them, enabling the creation of high-strength, lightweight composites with clean interfaces. Fugo provides an extensive array of roll-bonded products, from aluminum-copper to titanium-steel components, catering to industries like energy, oil and gas, chemicals, petrochemicals, and new energy vehicles.

Production Process

Raw material Preparation:

Surfaces of both metals are thoroughly cleaned and prepared. This critical step removes all oxides, contaminants, and imperfections to create pristine interfaces essential for a flawless metallurgical bond during rolling.

Assembly & Welding:

The prepared cladding and base plates are precisely stacked and their edges are sealed together by welding to form a composite clad pack. This sealing is essential to isolate the interface and prepare for the subsequent vacuum process.

Evacuation(Vacuumizing):

A vacuum is created inside the sealed assembly by extracting air through a small port. This step is crucial to eliminate oxygen and moisture from the bonding interface, preventing oxidation and ensuring a clean, high-strength metallurgical bond during the subsequent hot rolling process.

Hot Rolling:

The sealed assembly is heated to a precise, controlled temperature in a furnace and then passed through a heavy rolling mill. The combined application of high temperature and immense pressure creates a permanent, full-area metallurgical bond between the metal layers while reducing them to the desired final thickness.

Heat Treatment:

A tailored post-roll heat treatment cycle is applied to relieve residual stresses from the rolling process, optimize the microstructure of both metal layers, and achieve the target mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

Flattening:

The cut plates undergo a flattening process to correct any warping or residual curvature introduced during rolling and heat treatment. This ensures the plates meet flatness tolerances required for subsequent fabrication and final application.

Cutting:

After heat treatment, the large bonded plate undergoes primary cutting. This step involves cutting or dividing the plate into smaller, more manageable blanks or specific sizes based on preliminary order requirements, preparing them for further testing and final machining.

Testing:

The plate undergoes rigorous non-destructive evaluation, primarily ultrasonic testing (UT), to verify bond integrity and uniformity across the entire interface. Mechanical tests (tensile, shear, bending, impact) are conducted to confirm performance meets or exceeds specified standards.

Grinding:

The fully tested and heat-treated plate is cut, trimmed, and machined (e.g., edge preparation, leveling) to meet the exact dimensional tolerances and finish specifications required by the end-user.

Final Inspection:

A comprehensive quality check is performed, including visual inspection, precise dimensional verification, surface quality assessment, and a final review of all material and testing documentation.

Packing:

The finished plate surface is protected, marked with identification and material tracing information, and securely packaged for shipment or storage.

Rolled clad plate is a high-performance composite metal material manufactured through a thermomechanical bonding process. This method involves simultaneously hot rolling multiple layers of metals under controlled temperature and pressure to achieve a permanent, full-area metallurgical bond.
