What's Roll Bonding

  • ‌Roll Bonding‌ is a solid-state welding technique that utilizes rolling pressure to join multiple metal layers into a composite material. Its key feature lies in its ability to seamlessly bond identical or dissimilar metals without melting them, enabling the creation of high-strength, lightweight composites with clean interfaces. Fugo provides an extensive array of roll-bonded products, from aluminum-copper to titanium-steel components, catering to industries like energy, oil and gas, chemicals, petrochemicals, and new energy vehicles.

Production Process

First, the surfaces of the base metal (e.g., carbon steel) and the cladding metal (e.g., stainless steel) are meticulously cleaned to remove impurities. The two layers are aligned, and their edges are welded to form a sealed unit, preventing oxidation during heating.

Next, the composite is heated in a furnace to promote atomic diffusion at the interface.

Finally, hot rolling applies high pressure to bond the metals through solid-phase welding, avoiding melting and preserving their original properties.

‌Materials and Applications

Common cladding materials include stainless steel, nickel, copper, and aluminum. These composites are widely used in pressure vessels, chemical tanks, aerospace components, and architectural structures. For instance, aluminum-clad steel offers lightweight durability but requires precise temperature control to avoid forming brittle intermetallic compounds.

Advantages and Considerations

Roll bonding provides a sustainable alternative to using bulk high-cost alloys by applying them as thin functional layers. However, material compatibility is crucial. Differences in thermal expansion coefficients or reactivity (e.g., steel and aluminum) demand careful process optimization to prevent delamination or brittle phase formation.

In summary, roll bonding is a versatile, economical method for engineering hybrid materials that meet the demands of modern industry. By merging dissimilar metals into a unified structure, it bridges the gap between material limitations and engineering innovation.
