Key Contents of ASTM A264 (Stainless Chromium-Nickel Steel-Clad Plate)

  • Scope

This specification covers plate of a carbon steel or low-alloy steel base to which is integrally and continuously bonded on one or both sides a layer of stainless chromiumnickel steel. The material is generally intended for pressure vessel use.

  • Material requirement

Specifies the chemical composition and mechanical properties of the clad and base metals. The base metal shall be carbon steel or low-alloy steel conforming to the ASTM specifications for steel for pressure vessels. The alloy-cladding metal specified shall conform to the requirements as to chemical composition prescribed for the respective chromium-nickel or duplex steel in Specification A240/A240M.

  • Manufacturing Process

Describes any method that will produce a clad steel that will conform to the requirements of this specification. For explosively bonded products, the alloy cladding metal may be comprised of two or more separate alloy plates or sheets completely welded together to form a single fabricated component.

Requires proper heat treatment and welding processing to ensure metallurgical bonding and integrity.

  • Mechanical properties and testing

Specifies tests for bond strength, tensile strength, and shear strength.

Dimensions and Tolerances

Sets thickness requirements for both the base metal and the cladding layer.

Defines allowable variations in dimensions and flatness.

  • Workmanship, Finish, and Appearance

The material shall be free of injurious defects, shall have a workmanlike appearance, and shall conform to the designated finish.Plate alloy surfaces shall be blasted (descaled by means of sand or stainless grit, shot, or wire), pickled, blast-cleaned and pickled, or 100 % conditioned.

  • Inspection and Certification

Requires manufacturers to provide test reports and certifications to verify compliance.

Allows for additional testing if requested by the purchaser.

Sampling requirements

Basic Requirements

Chemical Analysis

In accordance with specifications of base or Cladding metal

Tensile strength

1. Thickness of clad plate≤38mm&The specified minimum tensile value of base steel≤ 485 Mpa & The specified minimum yield Strength of base steel≤275 Mpa.The tensile properties thus determined shall be not less than the minimum and not more than 35Mpa over the max required value of base steel.

In accordance with specification of base metal

Sampling from clad plate directly

2. Thickness of clad plate>38mm or The specified minimum tensile strength of base steel is greater than 485 Mpa or The specified minimum yield strength of the base steel>275 Mpa. The tensile properties shall be determined by a tension test of the base steel.

In accordance with specification of base metal

The cladding layer shall be removed before the test.

3. If the cladding is for corrosion allowance only, the cladding need not be included in the tensile test. The tensile properties thus determined shall meet the base material.

In accordance with specification of base metal

The cladding layer shall be removed before the test.

Bond Strength

Shear Strength Test

≥20,000psi(140 MPa)

Each Clad Plate

Near a top or bottom corner of the plate as rolled, parallel to its longitudinal axis, or other location that is representative of the final product.

Bond Strength Test

Bend test:As an alternative to the shear strength test.

At least two of the three tests shall show not more than 50 % separation on both edges of the bent portion.

Each Clad Plate

At right angles to its longitudinal axis.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

1. Minimum composite thickness≥3/8 in. (10 mm) Or

2. when specified by the purchaser

3. Minimum composite thickness≤3⁄8 in. (10 mm)

4. (In accordance with the Procedures and Methods of Specification A578/A578M)

5. Class 1;Class 3;Class 5

If UT is not specified, Class 5 shall apply.

Each Clad Plate

Extent of ultrasonic examination shall be at the discretion of the manufacturer and sufficient enough to provide the quality level required by the purchaser.

Dimension

Thickness

  • Ordered nominal Thickness:

Shall be 0.3mm under each for backing steel or total thickness, and 0.8mm under for the alloy cladding.

  • Ordered minimum Thickness:

Greater of 3mm or 10% of the total clad thickness ordered and may occur in either backing steel, cladding, or both, provided the minimum for each is met.

Each Clad Plate

Others

Other permissible variations shall be in accordance with Specification A20/A20M

Liquid penetrant Test

Refers to Table 14 of ASME SA264

The material manufacturer may repair defects in cladding by welding provided the following requirements are met:

1.The manufacturer and the purchaser agree on the test results as a part of the certification.

2. The defective area shall be removed and the area prepared for repair shall be examined by a liquid penetrant method.

3.The surface condition of the repaired area shall be restored to a condition similar to the rest of the cladding.

Defective area

Method of test and acceptance standard shall be as agreed upon between the purchaser and the manufacturer.
